His name is Paris
Inspired from the jury of the “First Beauty Contest of the World”, this artificial intelligence is grading websites and is giving web awards to the best ones.
The roots of his name is coming from the Greek mythology. Paris was the son of Priam, king of Troy. According to Homer’s Iliad, everything happened about three thousand years ago: Zeus organized the First Beauty Contest of the World, where the 3 nominees were Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. The 3 goddesses were as beautiful as powerful. So the goddesses attempted to convince Paris to be elected: Hera offered him the ownership of Eurasia. Athena offered him skill and wisdom. Lastly, Aphrodite offered the love of the most beautiful woman on Earth: Helen of Sparta. Paris has chosen Aphrodite; and therefore Helen.
However there was a problem. The beautiful Helen was the young wife of King Menelas, the ruler of Sparta. So the Spartans were so angry that they attacked to the city of Troy, where Paris and Helen get married. Finally as everybody knows, the story ends with the legendary War of Troy, and the invention of the “Big Wooden Horse” used to open the doors of the city.
Now, as of today, Paris returns back to the red carpets, this time as an artificial intelligence to give Awards to the beauty of the websites, which are the strong goddesses of the technology.
Beautiful websites will be awarded
The team behind “Paris the A.I.” is working for about 3 years to realize a machine learning process concerning the “beauty” of the websites.
“Of course the beauty is composed of several components. One of the questions in miss beauty contests, is the number of languages that the candidates know, although a foreign language seems to have nothing with the beauty” says Deniz Senturk, a team member and public relations manager of WebAwards.com. To this respect, according to her, “Paris the A.I. understands not only the design, but also the technology behind a website. A beautiful website has to be fast, secure, user friendly. Creativity, originality and the content also are parts of the beauty.”
“So the A.I. jury, studied from public sources about 80.000 decisions given by the human juries under various conditions, during the last 20 years.”
“Is there a correlation between colors used in a website, and the voting behavior of the juries? If we add another parameter -like weather in the day of the voting- this correlation is stronger or not? Can an artificial brain imitate the voting behavior of a human jury?”
Abstract nature of the beauty
Beauty has objective and subjective aspects, from where the difficulty of judging the beauty comes. Although the “aesthetic value” seems to change from one person to another, and it is told that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, The A.I. proves that there are concrete points where we all agree in some definitions. While every individual has his own definition of beauty, decisions of judges while defining beauty of websites have strong similarities.
So Paris decides according to these similarities and correlations; and he chooses the best websites. Machine learning processes ameliorate his “awareness” of what he does, and every new day he grades a website he does it better.
The future is brilliant for artificial intelligence juries.
