The Mental Health Coach Expands Its Mental Health First Aid Training Across Australia

Mental Health First Aid educates individuals about mental health, allowing them to identify risk factors and offer intervention.

The Mental Health Coach, the leading institution for mental health education in Australia, is expanding its Mental Health First Aid training (MHFA) course across the country this year. This move is made in response to the increasing demand for evidence-based training that addresses mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. This is also to better serve the growing mental health needs of communities in Australia.

It is estimated that 1 in 5 Australians experience a form of mental illness each year, with around 3000 cases of suicide. But despite this alarming number, only a small percentage of individuals with mental illness receive treatment because of the stigma behind their condition.

MHFA is launched to address this problem and raise awareness about mental health. It teaches participants how to recognize and respond to signs of poor mental health. The program equips them with the necessary skill set to have a safe conversation with someone they are worried about so they can point them in the right direction to get professional support.

“Learning Mental Health First Aid is an essential workplace skill,” says company founder and course facilitator Nick McEwan-Hall. “You can save a life with Mental Health First Aid skills by helping someone experiencing a mental health crisis.”

In the workplace, mental health issues are often not given enough importance. As a result, employees who experience constant stress, anxiety, and burnout do not get the support they need, leading to poor mental well-being. By making MHFA training and other mental health courses a priority, companies can improve health outcomes as well as boost productivity and workplace camaraderie.

“If you are training your team in physical first aid, then you must also equip them with Mental Health First Aid skills,” added McEwan-Hall.

With the program expansion, McEwan-Hall hopes to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and make discussions about the topic a norm. MHFA is offered in person, online, and in-house for companies and other organizations. A Mental Health First Aid refresher course is also available.

Aside from the Mental Health First Aid online course, The Mental Health Coach offers courses that support and empower adults and teenagers. It operates an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) that tackles diverse life challenges, including work-related, personal health, and even life-related problems. The program is run by qualified counsellors and coaches passionate about transforming other people’s lives for the better.
